Spill closes main intersection for hours
web
posted April 21, 2009
EDGEFIELD – Spilling
your guts is often
thought of as a good thing - when someone releases information. That
was not the case this weekend. Highway 25 at Crest Road and Meeting
Street was closed off early Saturday morning for several hours when a
truck hauling waste by-products of pig and chicken processing reported
a “grease spill” in the area at 6:11 am. The Edgefield Police and Fire
Department, Sheriff’s Deputies, and the State Highway Patrol were
called to the scene where the road was covered in what one officer
described as “pig guts all over the road”.
The truck driver reported the spill while en route to a reclamation
site. Estimates were the truck was hauling between 60,000 and 90,000
pounds of pig and chicken innards when the spill took place. The truck
did not overturn or topple to cause the spill officials said; rather
the load was able to make its way outside the container and spill on
the roadway.
The spill reached from Crest Road (Highway 23 Bypass), to Meeting
Street and then across
Highway 25 (Buncome Street). Carolina By-Products was called to assist
in the clean up. Traffic was diverted in the area for several hours.
The roadway was reopened shortly before 1 pm Saturday after the clean
up was completed.
