Edgefield nursing home worker charged with felony abuse of 81-year-old
patient
web
posted April 24, 2008
EDGEFIELD – A felony warrant has been
issued for the arrest of a caregiver in the alleged abuse of an
81-year-old man at Trinity Mission Health and Rehab Center in
Edgefield, Edgefield Police Chief Ronnie Carter confirmed late
Wednesday. Denise Bagwell, 57, of McCormick, is scheduled to turn
herself in to authorities early today and will be charged with felony
assault on a vulnerable adult.
The Edgefield Police Department began investigating the alleged assault
after receiving information that an 81-year-old patient at nursing home
claimed one of the staff “punched him in the eye”. The patient was
taken to the Edgefield County Hospital for treatment of a badly bruised
left eye last Tuesday and an official report was made to the Edgefield
Police Department the next day, which launched the investigation.
According to police reports, Ms. Bagwell claimed the elderly man was
trying to punch her and she pushed his hand and he hit himself in the
eye. The elderly man suffered a large bruised area around, above, and
below the eye and fractured a bone below the eye socket. He was also
seen by an eye doctor last Thursday for possible injuries to the eye
itself.
The man’s daughter told police that her father has complained Bagwell
was “always rude and mean to him,” reports stated.
The weeklong investigation included interviews with the elderly man’s
family, workers at the nursing home, and attending physicians. Once the
investigation concluded all the evidence in the case was presented to
Edgefield County Magistrate Brenda Carpenter who issued the warrant for
Bagwell’s arrest. She was suspended from work, police reports stated,
at the onset of the investigation.
Chief Carter said that felony abuse of a vulnerable adult could carry
up to a five year sentence, if convicted.
EdgefieldDaily.com was unable to reach officials at the Trinity Mission
nursing home due to the late hour. We will continue to follow the story
first reported by EdgefieldDaily.com as more information becomes
available.
This is not the first report of problems at Trinity Mission. In
December of 2006 a 76 year-old
woman called 911 to report she needed help due to sliding out of
her wheelchair at the nursing home. The dispatcher called back and
advised workers of the woman’s call. According to police reports, the
person answering the phone at the home said, “Oh Lord,” and started
laughing.
When the staffer at the nursing home called back into dispatch she was
still laughing and reported the woman was fine, reports state. The
officer arrived at the home and was met by a woman that, “started
laughing that we showed up for the call,” the report reads in part. The
officer requested to speak with the administration person on duty and
explained why he was there. The officer then requested to see the woman
that placed the call.
When he was shown to the room where the woman stays she thanked the
officer for coming. According to her statement to police she was
sliding out of her wheelchair and asking for help, “but everyone was
walking by her and laughing not paying her any attention.” It was then
she called 911.
Another family contacted by EdgefieldDaily.com stated they placed their
mother at the facility and removed her in less than a week due to
insufficient care.
This is the first reported charge that has stemmed from complaints at
the nursing home.
