Photo of phone call exposes false claim by Singletary
web
posted April 24, 2009
EDGEFIELD – With so
much focus being
placed on William Singletary’s billion dollar lawsuit naming several
law enforcement officers, elected officials, a lawyer, the Sheriff’s
Office, and the Town of Edgefield, Singletary has been slowly leaking
out evidence he claims supports his claims of racial discrimination,
harassment, and even death threats. The latest such claimed
evidence
was a photograph of his phone’s caller ID showing a call to his
home at
2:27 am on April 1, a time he claims he was in jail in Richmond County,
Georgia. “It proves I’m telling the truth,” Singletary said on Monday
and reiterated again on Thursday.
Mr. Singletary’s phone shows that a call was received at 2:27 am on
April 1, from the Edgefield County Dispatch Office (E-911) from the
number 637-4089. EdgefieldDaily.com has confirmed that is a number used
by the E-911 Center. According to Mr. Singletary, he has received a
call from that number a total of twelve times. Singletary claims that
the threats, coming from that number, are usually a male voice making
the threats and telling him to drop his lawsuit against the Sheriff’s
Office.
It is not always the same voice, Singletary said, but the callers
always mention the Sheriff’s Office “specifically” and not the Sheriff.
It made a great news story for a few days. The dramatic picture showing
the Sheriff’s Office was calling him at all hours of the night and the
unrecorded threats which are at the basis of his ever-growing lawsuit.
So EdgefieldDaily.com continued to investigate the claims even though
law enforcement refuses to comment on anything remotely related to the
lawsuit.
As it turns out, the photograph of the phone call was a tipping point
that turns out not to prove Mr. Singletary is telling the truth, but
rather he either is mistaken or is purposely misrepresenting the facts.
A report
on EdgefieldDaily.com on April 3 began to raise a red flag. It was
a report in which Mr. Singletary was a victim of an alleged crime,
though his identity was withheld in the report. E-911 dispatchers
received a 911 call from Mr. Singletary’s home around 2:24 am on April
1 and the caller hung up. As protocol, the dispatchers tried to
reestablish the line as they were heard over the radio telling
Edgefield Police of the call.
According to police reports used in the original report, the phone line
at one point remained open and “all you could hear was yelling.” Police
arrived on the scene and spotted Raymond Harris exiting Singletary’s
house and recognized him as being wanted on an outstanding warrant.
When they attempted to take him into custody he ran. A short manhunt
eventually located Harris and he was taken into custody.
The incident report shows the call was dispatched at 2:24 am and
officers first arrived at the Mims Street home at 2:27 am, the same
time shown on Singletary’s phone. The report states Singletary told
police he was drinking alcohol with Mr. Harris just prior to allegedly
discovering Harris was trying to steal CDs, jewelry and other items and
“called 911”.
It is true that Mr. Singletary was arrested by Richmond County Deputies
on April 1, however, that arrest took place a full 19 hours later at
9:44 pm.
The facts run counter to Mr. Singletary’s claims regarding the events.
According to Mr. Singletary’s own admissions, he inquired as to why
Edgefield Police Chief Ronnie Carter dropped the investigation on
Captain Wash for alleged threats, and said Chief Carter told him that
Sheriff Dobey was sitting next to Capt. Wash when the call was made on
a cell phone and denied the threats were ever made. Singletary claims
the call did not come from a cell phone, but rather from the Edgefield
County Sheriff’s Office.
Unless Mr. Singletary is willing to release his phone records, there is
no way to verify this claim.
In another report and interview involving Edgefield Town Attorney Greg
Anderson,
Singletary claims Mr. Anderson cursed him saying, “who the ‘f’
are you,” when Singletary walked into the office, cursed him more, made
threats, and then told him to “get the ‘f’ out of my office.”
Unbeknownst to Mr. Singletary, a witness to the event was in the next
room and has stated that everything Singletary claims, ”never happened”.
The recent information obtained during EdgefieldDaily.com’s
investigation is beginning to cast some doubt on the veracity of some
of Mr. Singletary’s claims. A fourth interview on Thursday to confirm
Singletary’s earlier claims remained consistent on his part.
All defendants involved in the lawsuit have refused to comment on the
case.
EdgefieldDaily.com will continue our investigation through resources
and pubic records available to shed as much light on the situation as
possible.
