Internet sale leaves Edgefield man with $3,400 in worthless checks

web posted April 26, 2007
EDGEFIELD – An Edgefield man called the Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday to report a fraud. According to the man, his bank contacted him about four cashiers’ checks he deposited that were returned as fraudulent. The checks came from a sale over the internet.

Police reports indicate the man sold computers to a person he met online that claimed to be a worker for the Untied Nations based in the United Kingdom. The so-called UN worker sent the checks as payment for the computers that were purchased, totaling $3,400.

Internet scammers have long used fraudulent cashiers’ checks as a way to lure in unsuspecting victims. Generally local law enforcement is powerless to investigate crimes that are based overseas.

The case has been turned over to investigators.
