Governor Sanford stops in Edgefield Friday

EDGEFIELD – South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford stopped by Edgefield Friday to speak with residents about the state budget for Fiscal year 2006-2007. Governor Sanford said he wanted to “interact” with residents to “get a thumbs up or down” on the budget. “The Senate has passed the budget,” he said, “we basically have three more weeks before it is done in full.” The only way things can change now is for the citizens to give their input.

The main point Governor Sanford pointed out was a 25.2% increase in spending over the last three years, “The big question is, is it sustainable.”  As an example Governor Sanford mentioned Economic Development, which the House and Senate versions placed $7 million in the closing fund, “but they funded it with non-recurring sources of income,” he said, “We argue that is not good policy.”

Recurring sources of income are those that the state can count on to be there every year. The nonrecurring sources are those that the state may, or may not, have next year. “You wouldn’t do it with your family budget,” Governor Sanford said, adding it would be like getting a bonus one year and going out buying a new expensive car hoping the same bonus would be coming every year. “You just can’t count on that happening,” he said.

Presenting a sustainable budget and being able to provide public services each year is very important the Governor said.

On another subject, the bill on charter schools passed this week and the bill should be on the Governor’s desk next week. “We will be having a signing next week,” he said, adding he supported the bill throughout the process.
