Edgefield Police nab suspected drug dealer at checkpoint

web posted May 2, 2008
EDGEFIELD – Edgefield Police have taken a man they suspect as dealing drugs into custody after he arrived at a designated checkpoint Wednesday night. According to police reports, William Edward Singleton Jr., 22, of Edgefield entered the checkpoint on Jeter Street and could not produce a valid drivers license. A check of his records showed his license was suspended due to a “controlled substance violation,” reports showed.

When officers asked if there were any illegal items or weapons in the 1994 Chevy van he was driving Mr. Singleton said there were not. When officers asked to search the van Mr. Williams reportedly said, “You don’t have a reason.” It was then Mr. Singleton was placed under arrest for driving under suspension. During the search after his arrest officers found three small bags of what was believed to be marijuana in his pocket.

A Sheriff’s Deputy searched the jacket Singleton laid on the front seat and found a larger bag of what was believed to be marijuana. All the suspected drugs were taken into evidence.

Once transported to the Edgefield County Detention Center a final search found yet another small bag containing additional suspected marijuana.

Mr. Singleton was charged with driving under suspension and additional warrants for possession with the intent to distribute marijuana and possession with the intent to distribute marijuana within the proximity of a school or park were being sought.

Repeated calls to the Edgefield County Detention Center for actual charges went unanswered Thursday. It is unknown if Mr. Singleton was still in custody or had been released on bond.
