Farmers Market coming to Edgefield twice a month

web posted May 6, 2008
EDGEFIELD – Things could look a bit different on the Edgefield Town Square on weekends in the coming weeks if Joannah Holmes and the Edgefield Community Development Association have anything to say about it. Ms. Holmes appeared before the Edgefield Town Council to ask permission to bring a Farmers Market to the town square the first and third Saturday of May through August or September. “We really want to stimulate things downtown,” Ms. Holmes said.

Ms. Holmes said the “Shop Around” has brought a number of people to Edgefield, and those that come on the weekend find very few of the shops open and very little for them to do. “We want to change that,” Holmes said, adding that by bringing the Farmers Market on the weekends would encourage local businesses that usually close to remain open.

Visitors come on the weekends claiming they have heard of all the history and activities and there is very little for them to do saying things downtown on the weekend are “pretty dead” Ms. Holmes said.

The first planned market is set for May 17 and will run from 8am until noon. “We have people interested already,” Ms. Holmes said with vendors for vegetables, farm products, eggs, and even baked goods. “We’re not turning anyone away.”

Vendors interested in reserving a space for the market will have to pay a nominal fee of $5 to reserve their space and space is not limited to Edgefield County residents. “We’ve been contacted by several people from Aiken,” Holmes said. Among other activities that would be available to shoppers include a possible “skit” preformed about Becky Cotton, one of Edgefield County’s most notorious women, and area artists who would be located at local businesses.

“I’m very, very excited about this,” Mayor Ken Durham said.

The Farmers Market would be contained to the inner section of the town square from Penn Street to Main Street.

With no discussion the Edgefield Town Council granted permission for the project to move forward. Edgefield Town Councilman Bill Jackson suggested holding the market every weekend. Ms. Holmes said that would be taken into consideration.

Anyone seeking more information about the farmers market or to request a location can call Ms. Holmes at 803-637-1981.
