License check results in arrest and one on the run

web posted May 11, 2006

EDGEFIELD – A license check at the intersection of Highways 25 and 378 resulted in one arrest and one individual escaping from police Friday. An Edgefield County Sheriff’s Investigator was assisting the South Carolina Highway Patrol at the checkpoint when a green car approached. When the Trooper asked for drivers license and insurance papers, the man handed them to the Trooper through the window behind him. Officers immediately noticed a strong smell of marijuana emanating from the car.

Officers asked the driver to place the car in park and for both men to exit the vehicle. After hesitating, the driver finally complied. Once outside the car, the driver ran and an ensuing foot chase began. The passenger of the car was placed under arrest at that time. While the driver ran, several plastic bags containing what was later identified as marijuana began falling from his pants.

The driver was able to escape police on foot; however, police were still in possession of his drivers license and other information.

A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of even more drugs in the glove compartment. The passenger, Derrick Leonard Turner, 20, of Highway 25 north, was arrested for simple possession of marijuana and booked into the Edgefield County Detention Center. The driver, identified as Travis Turner, 23, of the same address, now has a warrant out for his arrest.

After further investigation, the charges on both men were upgraded to possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute. The investigation is continuing reports state
