Internet chat leads to theft, possible drugging of victim

web posted May 13, 2008
EDGEFIELD – Edgefield Police are investigating a case where the victim may have been drugged before the suspect began stealing thousands of dollars in electronics, prescription drugs, other items, cash, and his car. The suspect is a 50 year old woman from San Diego California that the victim met over the internet.

According to police reports the male victim began chatting with the suspect and paid for a bus ticket for her to come to see him. She arrived in Augusta on Thursday and the two returned to the man’s home in Edgefield. On Friday the man claims his houseguest had a lime drink waiting on him when he returned home and became very sleepy a short time later and went to sleep around 7 pm.

When he awoke on Saturday morning around 5:30 am the woman, her suitcases, his Hyundai Santa Fe, $200 in cash from his wallet, pain killers, Viagra, a laptop computer, a flat screen TV, clothes, household goods, and other items totaling more than $15,000 were gone.

A search of the internet site prisonpenpals.net, where the suspect had a listing, showed the woman’s profile and account has been deleted.

The case is currently under investigation. Edgefield Police Chief Ronnie Carter said they would be seeking a warrant for Catherine Brosemer. She is described as a white female with curly brown hair and brown eyes, 5’ 6” tall and weighing approximately 180 pounds and has a large tattoo on her right leg above the ankle.

Chief Carter said they would be obtaining warrants for grand larceny and grand larceny of a motor vehicle. Additional charges could be pending the testing of the drink and the undissolved residue found at the bottom of the bottle.

Brosemer is currently on parole in California after serving time for a conviction of computer fraud. Authorities believe Ms. Brosemer may still be in the CSRA.
