Stage of Southern History to be shown at Edgefield’s Razzle Dazzle Day
web
posted May 14, 2010
EDGEFIELD – The recently released
documentary, Edgewood: Stage of Southern History, will be shown in
Edgefield, S.C. on Saturday, May 22, 2010 as part of the Razzle Dazzle
Day festivities. One of three events in the yearlong celebration for
the town’s 225th birthday, Razzle Dazzle Day will be a family fun event
on the square with activities for children available.
Free showings of the documentary Edgewood: Stage of Southern History
will take place at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. in the Orientation Room
of the Discovery Center.
The documentary’s story begins in Edgefield, and parts of the movie
were filmed in the town. Edgewood DVDs will be available for purchase
at $20 each at the free showings. Over the years, Edgewood has served
as the stage for many important periods in Southern history. Originally
built in 1829 in Edgefield, S.S. for secessionist governor Francis W.
Pickens, the house was home to two remarkable women, Lucy Holcombe
Pickens and Eulalie Chafee Salley. Lucy was known as the “Queen of the
Confederacy” and was the only woman to be featured on Confederate
currency. Eulalie was one of South Carolina’s earliest business women
and was also a leader in the suffrage movement.
The documentary tells the stories of the many people who lived, worked
and visited the house in its 180 years of existence including stories
of: the Antebellum era in South Carolina, the War Between the States,
the Pickens visit to Czarist Russia, the Suffrage movement, the Winter
Colony settlement in Aiken, and the Civil Rights Era. Today, the house
is known as the Pickens-Salley House and is located on the University
of South Carolina Aiken campus. More information on the documentary is
available at www.edgewoodfilm.com
To attend the movie, reservations must be made by contacting the
Discovery Center at 803.637.0877 or edgefielddc@scprt.com. Light
refreshments will be available.
