Edgefield Police Officers first to subdue suspect with Taser web posted May 15, 2007 EDGEFIELD – Edgefield Police Officers are now the first in the county to successfully deploy the use of Tasers in an arrest. Officers were called to a disturbance on Sourwood Drive and found a man standing in the doorway of the home. When they asked him what was going on inside he began yelling at the officers. As they continued to try to talk to the man he began cursing as he was yelling. Officers tried to calm the man and repeatedly requested he lower his voice, police reports state. A woman at the home stated she felt threatened by the man’s actions. She reportedly told officers the man was intoxicated. As officers continued to try to calm the man he continued his “profane language” at which time he was advised if he did not stop he would be arrested. “well (expletive) it then,” the man reportedly told officers who informed him he was now under arrest. Reports indicate the man then told officers, “I’m not doing (expletive)” and began walking away. The officers then unholstered their tasers and the man then turned and threw something at one of the officers. The officer shot the man with his taser sending the suspect to his knees. The man then began trying to pull one of the probes from his arm when the officer ordered him to lie down and place his hands behind his back. He instead began trying to get up again and the officer initiated another pulse to the probes subduing the man into compliance. Charlie B. Knolton, 35, of the 400 block of Sourwood Drive was arrested for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest at that time. He also became the first suspect apprehended in the county with the use of a Taser. Johnston Police also began using the Taser earlier this year and the Sheriff’s Office will deploy four later this year. The Tasers deployed by the Edgefield Police Department also record video and audio. EdgefieldDaily.com will try to acquire the footage as soon as it is made available to place it online. For
