DUI suspect picks wrong time to run from arrest web posted May 15, 2007 EDGEFIELD – If you are going to run from a police officer, here is a bit of advice; be able to run from a police officer. That small bit of information might have been useful to a Johnston woman arrested Saturday night after leaving a local bar. Johnston Police were called to the Johnston Pool Hall to assist an Edgefield County Deputy and as he arrived he spotted a white Mazda pull away from the scene and run off the road in the turn. The car then crossed the centerline several times before the officer could initiate a traffic stop. The officer identified the woman as Janie Marie Garropy, 50, of Lee Street in Johnston. The Johnston Police Officer informed Ms. Garropy that due to her driving and the strong odor of alcohol he was going to conduct a “field sobriety test”, reports indicate. Ms. Garropy said she was not going to perform any tests and was arrested and transported to the Edgefield County Detention Center for booking. The Detention Center is equipped with a system of prisoner loading and unloading in an enclosed area of the facility known as a “sally port” where roll-up doors are opened for the patrol car to enter and then be closed before the detainee is allowed out of the vehicle. According to incident reports the officer went to remove Ms. Garropy from the car to be moved to booking and noticed her shoes were on the floorboard of the car. When he went to retrieve the shoes Ms. Garropy ran but was confined by the fenced area inside the “sally port”. An Edgefield Town Police Officer also in the Detention Center at the time assisted in subduing the want-to-be escapee. She was eventually booked for driving under the influence early Sunday morning after refusing to take a breathalyzer or blood test. For
