Serial burglar sentenced to 15 years in prison
web
posted May 15, 2010
EDGEFIELD – A man responsible for a number
of burglaries that plagued the Merriwether area last year has been
sentenced to 15 years behind bars for his crimes. Robert Webber, 36,
pleaded guilty to burglary in the first degree in General Sessions
Court on Friday. Classified as a violent crime, Webber will have to
serve 85% of the sentence before being considered for release.
The crime spree had residents in the Merriwether area weary of constant
reports of burglaries and many armed themselves when they saw
suspicious people on their property. One local television news crew was
even approached by an armed citizen while covering a report of one of
the crimes.
The saga came to a halt when a passing motorist, later identified as
Phillip Bell of Merriwether, reported seeing a suspicious red car going
in and out of driveways on Republican Road on June 3, 2009. A nearby
Sheriff’s Deputy responded to the location and spotted Webber coming
from around the corner of a home with stolen property in his hands.
Webber dropped the items and fled on foot leading to a massive manhunt
that included the Edgefield and Aiken County Sheriff’s Offices, SLED,
and local agencies as well as a helicopter.
The search ended when Webber was spotted walking through the backyard
of Jamie Tyler who held Webber at gunpoint until
deputies took him into custody.
Both Mr. Tyler and Mr. Bell were recognized by the Edgefield County
Council in August
of last year for their participation in ending the crime spree that
totaled well over $150,000 in guns, jewelry, electronics, and other
property being stolen.
Webber could have faced a sentence of 25 years to life in prison if he
had been found guilty during a trail.
