Crash sends woman, 4-year-old to MCG

web posted May 16, 2007
EDGEFIELD – A two car collision just after noon in Edgefield Tuesday sent a woman and a four year old boy to MCG Hospital in Augusta. The crash occurred when the driver of a Saab 93 was traveling southbound on Highway 25 and a woman driving a Ford Escort pulled out from the Dollar General store and tried to cross the highway and the cars collided. All three people in the Ford, the woman driver, another man, and a four year old boy, all struck the windshield upon impact. No child seat was found inside the car.

The woman driver was suffering from a possible broken left arm and the child was complaining of his head hurting. It was never determined if the child was in the back seat or sitting in the lap of one of the adults. The young boy was immobilized by EMS personnel and he and the woman were transported to MCG for treatment of their injuries. The driver of the Saab was complaining of ankle and knee pain but refused to be transported. The other passenger in the Ford was uninjured.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol arrived and investigated the crash finding the driver of the Ford at fault for failure to yield the right of way. She was also cited for a child restraint violation for not having the four year old in a car safety seat.

Both vehicles sustained heavy damage and had to be towed from the scene.
