Democrat County Council candidates square off in open forum
web
posted May 16, 2008
EDGEFIELD – The Democrat candidates for
local county council races were on hand at Thursday night’s Democrat
Party candidate forum and made their platforms known to voters in
attendance. District 1 incumbent Norman Dorn chose not to attend to
address voters concerns while his challenger Albert Talbert did and was
the first of the local candidates to address the public.
Mr. Talbert, who served on the county council for three terms twenty
years ago, said he was re-entering the race because, “the people in
District 1 deserve better leadership. They deserve someone that will
listen to them. They deserve better representation.” Mr. Talbert said
it was time that District 1 has a representative that will, “not say
one thing and then go and do another. I believe in strong leadership. I
believe in truth.”
Mr. Talbert said due to the size of the district it would be impossible
for him to knock on every door, “but I am knocking on doors and I am
asking you to knock on doors for me.” Talbert said that he believes if
he wins the June 10 primary he will win in November and that by
offering the people of District 1 strong leadership things would be
better in not only his district, but also the entire county.
James Rushton Jr. was next to speak and stated why he was challenging
18-year veteran County Council Chairman Monroe Kneece for the District
3 seat. Mr. Rushton said he was running, “because I want people to have
a choice.” Rushton said he did not want people to go to the polls and
look down and see only one name on the ballot. “I want to build a
county that children that graduate from this school can look forward to
living in their county.” Mr. Rushton said that he did not want them to
graduate and move away. “I want them to look forward to living here.”
Mr. Rushton said he did not want to see Edgefield County remain a
county of legends as the home of ten governors, “I want it to be a
county that is strong and one that we can be proud of.” He said he
wanted to see people looking forward to the future here. “When I was in
high school, Mr. Kneece was our future. It’s time for a change,” Mr.
Rushton said, “I want to be your future.”
County Council Chairman Kneece was next to speak and stated that Mr.
Rushton was a fine man and that he felt he would serve the people well
if elected. “But I’m not quite ready to turn it over to anybody.” Mr.
Kneece said he was first elected in 1990 and that he has served as
chairman for 17 of the 18 years he has been in office. “I think we have
done fairly good. We’re in good financial shape.”
Kneece said that trying to bring industry to Edgefield County is being
subverted, often times, by the governor and that economic development
is “not what it used to be.” Mr. Kneece said he felt that Mr. Rushton
would do a good job if elected and that if that were the case he would
support Rushton “100%” and that if he won he would hope Mr. Rushton
would do the same. “I’d like to serve a few more years,” he said in
closing.
Edgefield County Sheriff Adell Dobey and Clerk of Court Shirley Newby
were both out of town attending previously scheduled conferences and
unopposed District 4 county councilman Willie Bright spoke briefly
saying he was looking forward to serving constituents for another two
years.
