Barnwell man dies in fiery crash north of Edgefield

web posted May 21, 2008
EDGEFIELD – Edgefield County suffered its third traffic fatality Tuesday after a collision of a Cadillac and a tractor-trailer truck on Highway 25 just north of Plumb Brach Road around 4 pm. When the initial call to 911 came in there were reports of an entrapment of a driver and the car on fire. The Edgefield Fire Department, EMS, Edgefield Police, and Sheriff’s Deputies raced to the scene.

Upon their arrival they found the driver of the Cadillac pinned in the driver’s seat and flames beginning to spread inside the car. Truck drivers and others began using fire extinguishers to keep the flames at bay, but were unsuccessful. When the first fireman arrived he took his fire suit and placed over the man as they began extinguishing the fire.

Firefighters then began using the Jaws of Life to cut the car apart in order to extricate the man from the car. EMS called for a helicopter to airlift the man to MCG once he was stabilized. The helicopter arrived a few minutes later and landed at the intersection of Highway 25 and Plumb Branch Road. All traffic on Highway 25 was blocked due to the crash.

Once the man was removed from the car EMS workers began treating the man for severe burns to his legs and arms and assessing his other injuries. Once he was immobilized he was transported to the helicopter when it developed a fuel leak and the man was loaded back into the ambulance to be driven to MCG in very critical condition. He was pronounced dead at 5:30 pm, shortly after arrival. Deputy Coroner David Burnett said Douglas Alton Wilder, 73, of Barnwell died of massive internal injuries received in the crash.

A passenger in the Cadillac suffered some non-life threatening injuries and was taken by ambulance to Aiken Regional for Treatment. The driver of the tractor-trailer was also injured and transported to MCG.

The collision occurred as Mr. Wilder and his passenger were traveling south bound on Highway 25 when the car crossed the centerline and struck the front of the northbound tractor-trailer and then burst into flames. The truck then continued about fifty yards out of control and jackknifed and then struck a large oak tree.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

It took over three hours to clear the scene.

This is the third traffic fatality for Edgefield County this year.
