Safety Checkpoint Sees Suspected Drug Dealers Arrested

web posted May 21, 2014

EDGEFIELD A Safety Checkpoint at the intersection of Sweetwater Road and the Highway 25 bypass in Edgefield Friday night was eventful with two suspected drug dealers taken off the street, one injuring two officers while resisting arrest. The other driver was found to be transporting a substantial amount of crack cocaine back to Columbia.

The first encounter came when a red SUV approached the checkpoint and one of the officers noticed the passenger acting nervously. When he was asked to step out of the vehicle he refused and then eventually complied. When the officer frisked the passenger, identified as Frank Oliphant, 24, of Edgefield (above left), eventually "pushed officers away" and tried to run. He was taken into custody by multiple officers, two of which were injured in the process of the arrest.

Oliphant was found to be in possession of digital scales used to sell drugs and 11 grams of marijuana. He was booked on felony charges of possession with intent to distribute marijuana and resisting arrest with officer injuries. He was released on Sunday on a total of $15,000 in bonds.

Within the hour another vehicle approached and officers noticed the driver "leaning forward" as if he was pushing something under the seat. When stepping out of the car the driver was seen trying to kick something under the driver's seat, a report states. When asked if there was anything in the car the driver said the only thing in the car was "dirt". When asked where it was the report stated the driver said in the console.

A search of the console found two plastic bags containing at least 32 grams of crack cocaine and 19-year-old Markevious Blair, of Columbia was taken into custody. A further search recovered a small amount of marijuana. He was transported to the Edgefield County Detention Center and booked on a single charge of trafficking crack cocaine.

He too was release on Sunday with a $20,000 bond.

Both suspects used the same bonding company to be released.
