Two escape injury in near head-on collision

web posted May 26, 2007
EDGEFIELD – Two people escaped serious injury after a near head on collision Friday afternoon on Highway 23 around 2:20 pm. A woman traveling north in a Chevrolet Tahoe said she saw a line of cars coming towards her and the rear vehicle, a Ford F150 pick-up, began to enter her lane as if to pass. She assumed the driver would see her and reenter his lane, but he did not.

The truck continued to cross into her lane and the woman said she began taking evasive measures, “I headed towards the ditch,” she said adding that she felt she would be better off hitting the ditch than the truck. However, the driver of the Ford truck had fallen asleep and continued towards the Tahoe.

At the last instant the woman said she swerved again to avoid hitting the truck head on and the Ford struck the Tahoe at a glancing blow to the rear spinning the Tahoe around in the road. The Ford truck continued off the northbound side of the road until it struck a tree several yards off the road.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts and were unhurt in the crash. The teen driver of the truck was cited for too fast for conditions in the collision. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage and had to be towed from the scene. Traffic was reduced to one lane for over an hour.
