Saturday morning crash leaves one man dead

web posted May 26, 2007
EDGEFIELD – One man is dead and a second uninjured after a tragic crash on the southbound lane of Highway 23 just outside of Edgefield on Saturday morning. According to officials on the scene, a man driving a Lincoln Navigator struck the rear of a small flatbed truck that was carrying metal rods, sending some of the rods into the windshield of the Navigator. The Navigator then left the southbound lane of the highway and went down a 20-foot embankment before striking a tree.

The driver of the Navigator, whose identity is not being released at this time, was pronounced dead on the scene by Edgefield County Coroner Thurmond Burnett shortly after 10 am. The body was transported to the Edgefield County Hospital awaiting notification of family members. This marks the second traffic fatality of the year in Edgefield County.

The driver of the flatbed truck was not injured.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash. All traffic on Highway 23 was diverted for over four hours during the initial investigation.
