Crash victim identified web posted May 28, 2007 EDGEFIELD – The identity of the man killed in a crash Saturday morning has been released. Edgefield County Coroner Thurmond Burnett said Jermaine Carroll, 32, of Lilly Loop Road died of neck and head trauma. The collision took place just before 10 am Saturday on the southbound lane of Highway 23 just outside of Edgefield near Promised Land Road. A small flatbed truck hauling steel rods was stopped to make a left turn into a driveway when Mr. Carroll topped the hill and could not stop the Lincoln Navigator he was driving and crashed into the rear of the truck, sending several of the steel rods into the windshield killing Mr. Carroll instantly. The Navigator continued southbound for a distance then went down a 20-foot embankment before striking a tree. The crash blocked all traffic on Highway 23 for over four hours as the South Carolina Highway Patrol investigated the scene. The driver of the truck and two passengers were uninjured. This is the second traffic fatality in Edgefield County this year. The first came in February when Oquendo Jones, 17, of Johnston died after being ejected from a 2003 Chevy Blazer in a crash near Trenton. Statewide there have been 369 fatal crashes resulting in 403 deaths as of May 24. 188 of those were not wearing seatbelts according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Traffic fatalities have sharply increased since last year when 375 people were killed in all of 2006 on South Carolina Roads. For
