Driver, Passengers Run from Crashed SUV Fleeing Checkpoint

web posted June 3, 2014

EDGEFIELD Edgefield Police and the SC Highway Patrol were conducting a safety checkpoint late Friday night when a Cadillac Escalade turned onto Glover Street Extension, stopped and then backed up and "took off". Officers gave chase but lost sight of the vehicle and were searching in the area when dispatch received a 911 call of the SUV crashing on Glover Street and the three black males jumped out and ran.

A witness identified one of the passengers and said after he jumped from the SUV he landed in the road and "limped" to his residence nearby. The witness also said she had seen the driver at the home of the passenger she knew. Officers spoke to the passenger who confirmed he was in the SUV and identified the driver as 31-year-old Kenneth O'Bryant Carroll, of Edgefield.

During the investigation, Carroll walked up on the scene and told officers he was also in the vehicle but was not the driver. Carroll matched the description the witness gave of the driver. While speaking with Carroll an officer went to the witness and asked them to look out the window and see if the man outside was the driver. The witness said yes.

At that time Carroll was arrested and charged with simple possession of marijuana 2nd offense, driving under suspension 2nd offense, ABC violation, open container, leaving the scene of accident with property damage.

He is being held on a total of $3,036 in bonds, according to online court records Monday night.
