Edgefield Mayor's Notice of More Checkpoints Has a Bite

web posted June 5, 2014

EDGEFIELD A letter to the Editor by Edgefield Mayor Ken Durham informing citizens of the town, and the county, that the Edgefield Police Department will be conducting additional safety checkpoints around the town in the summer months has a bit of a bite to it in reality. For most people it is just an inconvenience, but for a growing number it leads to a trip to jail.

In the month of May, Edgefield Police, sometimes assisted by the SC Highway Patrol, have made quite a list of arrests on an assortment of felony charges and even more lesser charges for Magistrate Court.

Charges filed during a few checkpoints set up around the town include, possession with intent to distribute marijuana 2nd offense, trafficking in crack cocaine, simple possession of marijuana, driving under suspension, simple possession of marijuana 2nd offense, 5 ABC (alcohol) violations, and four arrest warrants served.

In other checkpoints earlier in the month, the arrests included those charged with trafficking in crack cocaine (8), leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, possession of a concealed weapon (brass knuckles), and a wide array of minor traffic citations and warnings. There were a total of 11 arrests.

The Edgefield County Sheriff's Office and Johnston Police have also stepped up the number of safety checkpoints over the past year and a half, meeting similar results.
