Copper Thieves Destroy Building, Appliances to Steal Copper Piping

web posted June 12, 2014

EDGEFIELD A worker checking on buildings used to house farm hands on Country Club Road found one of the buildings decimated inside and called the Sheriff's Office. The thefts started outside the building and then the back door was kicked open and that's when the real damage took place.

According to an incident report released Wednesday, the first copper tubing was cut from a propane tank sitting next to the building causing approximately $500 in damage and an unknown amount of copper stolen.

Once inside the building the thieves destroyed toilets, showers, sinks and hot water heaters to steal the copper. They then began tearing into the walls to steal even more, leaving the building with an estimated $10,800 in damages and an unknown amount of copper tubing stolen.

Some of the copper tubing stolen has white paint on it, the worker reporting the crime said.

The scene was photographed and processed. The case has been turned over to the Sheriff's Criminal Investigative Division for further investigation. The theft is believed to have taken place over the past two weeks.
