Peeler wins re-election with overwhelming support web posted June 14, 2006 EDGEFIELD – The hotly contested race for Edgefield County Probate Court Judge came to an end on Tuesday with incumbent Probate Judge Bobby Peeler winning the race with 60% of the vote and challenger Joan Herlong taking 40%. A total of 2556 votes were cast in the race. Reached by phone Tuesday night Judge Peeler said he was pleased with the results and wanted to thank everyone for supporting him over the past 16 years, “I’ll be back at work tomorrow, as always, and will continue to serve the people of Edgefield County to the very best of my ability.” Judge Peeler did not attend the announcing of election results at the Courthouse, however a group of his supporters gathered to hear the results as each precinct came in. Challenger Joan Herlong arrived with several of her family members and other supporters gathering at one end of the Voter Registration Office, among them County Councilman Everett Kitchens. After a few brief remarks to her supporters, Ms. Herlong left the courthouse when the final results were announced. Both campaigns worked very hard throughout the election cycle to garner the votes they received. Ms. Herlong recorded one the highest percentage of votes cast for a challenger of Judge Peeler over his sixteen-year tenure, with most of his elections taking over 70% of the votes in landslide elections. Judge Peeler took 10 of the 12 precints and garnered almost 80% of all absentee votes. Ms. Herlong assumed control of the Harmony and Johnston 2 precincts with 244 of the 410 votes cast. Judge Peeler said there were going to be some changes made at the Probate Court in the near future but did not elaborate on what those changes would be. Below is the vote totals by precinct. Precinct Bobby Peeler Joan Herlong Edgefield 1 150 87 Edgefield 2 163 108 Kendall 49 17 Brunson 86 47 Northside 81 47 Harmony 54 100 Jonston 1 139 108 Jonston 2 107 144 Trenton 194 127 Westside 140 36 Merriwether 1 48 34 Merriwether 2 67 42 Absentee 187 68 ______________________________________ Totals* 1531 1025 For
