EDGEFIELD – A 24-year-Augusta man turned himself in at the Edgefield County Detention Center Friday to face felony charges for a false report of a carjacking, kidnapping and armed robbery Monday morning, June 9. A few hours later Merriwether Firefighters called to a brush fire discovered the man’s car completely burned in a wooded area.

According to incident reports, Whitlock claimed he was carjacked by a man dressed in all black, including gloves and a mask, when he stopped to offer the man a ride. He claimed the man forced him to drive around several back roads for hours before letting him out of the car on Republican Road and he called 911.

A few hours later, a slow moving brush fire touched off by the intention burning of the car, was spotted and fire crews were called to the scene. A few hundred yards down a logging road was Whitlock’s car, completely burned, but was not hot to the touch.
