County morns tragic death of teacher

web posted June 21, 2007
EDGEFIELD – Edgefield County has lost a great teacher and friend with the untimely death of Jennie Stiner Rodgers, 56, on Monday, June 18. Mrs. Rodgers, a skilled equestrian, left the couples home on Log Creek Road to go horseback riding. When she did not return as anticipated her husband, Tom Rodgers, went looking for her and made the discovery.

Edgefield County Coroner Thurmond Burnett said Mrs. Rodgers died from head trauma she received in a fall. “We’re not really sure what happened,” Mr. Burnett said Wednesday, “the horse could have stumbled,” causing her to fall or be thrown from the horse resulting in the fatal injuries.

Mrs. Rodgers was an English teacher at Strom Thurmond High School and served 21 of her 29 years as a teacher with the Edgefield County School District.

Graveside services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Turkey Ridge Cemetery on Log Creek Rd. in Edgefield. Mrs. Rodgers was a native of Jacksboro, Tenn. and a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church of the Ridge. She graduated Mary Washington College in Virginia and received a Master's Degree in English from Clemson University.

Survivors include her husband and mother; one son, Mark Rodgers, Atlanta; one sister, Cindy Boshears, Clinton, Tenn. The family is at the home and will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the home of Judy Pendarvis on Rabbit Trail in Edgefield. Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
