18-wheeler fire causes evacuations in Edgefield

web posted June 25, 2010
EDGEFIELD – An ethanol tanker truck with overheated brakes ended up closing down the Highway 25 Bypass and the evacuation of businesses and homes in the general vicinity around 11 am Thursday. The first call to the Sheriff’s Dispatch stated a truck was stopped at the 4-way stop and not moving. A deputy arrived on the scene first and reported there was “smoke showing” on the rear wheels of the truck and the Edgefield Fire Department was called to respond.

The fire in the rear truck area was kept from spreading to the rest of the truck or to the tanker of ethanol. However, as some of the inner housing of the brake system continued to smoke, additional fire truck from Trenton, Johnston, and Merriwether were called to the scene.

EMA Director Mike Casey arrived a short time later and ordered the evacuation of the nearby businesses and homes. All traffic on the 25 Bypass, Jeter Street, and Highway 23 were detoured around the scene.

Firefighters continued to shower the truck and trailer with water in fear there may have been a leak of the full tanker of ethanol, providing what is known as a “water curtain”, in order to reduce the chance of a fire.

Two firefighters were sent to the truck after all safety measures were met and reported no leak from the tanker. The remaining smoking wheels were extinguished and the truck was towed from the seen. A second truck was brought to the scene to pick up the tanker trailer and finish its delivery.

The scene was cleared and the roads were reopened two hours into the incident.
