Sheriff’s Deputy attacked upon arrival at call
web
posted June 26, 2009
EDGEFIELD – An Edgefield County Sheriff’s
Deputy received minor injuries after being attacked shortly after
arriving to a call about a possible mental subject just before 9 pm
Wednesday night. The deputy arrived and spotted the subject walking
along the side of the road on the 300 block of Morgan Bussey Road and
pulled over to speak with the subject. When the deputy exited his
patrol vehicle and turned around, the subject was on a “dead run”
towards him and attacked, trying to take the deputy’s pistol from its
holster.
As the deputy and the man struggled they fell to the ground while the
man continued to try to wrestle the gun free, the deputy kept one hand
on his sidearm while trying to subdue the subject.
A second deputy arrived on the scene a short time later and made use of
the ASP Baton, striking the man several times in an effort to make him
stop the attack to no avail.
The second deputy then deployed a Taser, striking the subject in the
back which resulted in the man releasing the deputy from his grasp and
he was taken into custody. The deputy and the mental patient both
arrived at the Edgefield County Hospital where their injuries were
photographed and treated.
As luck would have it, the second deputy responding was not supposed to
be on duty and worked over to help handle the number of calls,
including the call for mutual aid from Greenwood County for a manhunt
of a suspected sexual assault suspect near the Greenwood and Edgefield
County line on Highway 25.
Fortunately, neither the deputy or the subject suffered serious
injuries in what could have quickly turned into a life nor death
situation had the extra deputy not chosen to stay on duty to aid in
answering calls.
