Reed suing Aiken County: Sought Assessor job back last year

web posted June 28, 2010
EDGEFIELD – Edgefield County Building Director Michael (Mike) Reed is suing Aiken County after resigning as Tax Assessor in 2007. The basis of the lawsuit is his claims of a hostile work environment by the county administrator and county council chairman. Reed, who left the job as Edgefield County’s Assessor to assume the Aiken County position, was rehired in Edgefield County in 2007 as Building Director.

Reed filed the lawsuit in June of 2009, “claiming that he was forced out of his job after highlighting financial abuse in the County. He claims that after he pointed this out, County Administrator Clay Killian and County Council Chairman Ronnie Young began to attack him, creating a hostile work environment. By doing this, Reed claims, Aiken County officials violated his First Amendment rights, and others in county chambers, specifically Killian and Young, conspired against him”, according to a recent story by The Aiken Standard on June 2, 2010

Aiken County is seeking a summary judgment in the case.

According to the report, Reed sought his job back for a second time as late as January 12, 2009.

The time frame of seeking the Aiken County Tax Assessor’s job again coincides with the swearing in of Republican County Council members Rodney Ashcraft and Genia Blackwell - who defeated two long-term council members on a campaign of transparency and accountability.

County Council vice-Chairman Willie Bright said he was unaware of the lawsuit or that Reed sought to be rehired in Aiken County last year. “No, I didn’t know anything about it,” Bright said Sunday. When asked if the revelations showed the qualities of a model employee Bright stated, “I have no comment”.

Council Members Ashcraft and Blackwell stated they were also unaware when contacted.

Building Director Reed is currently serving as head of the building department, assisting in the Assessor’s Office five hours a week, and now acting general contractor of the remodeling of the lower 4,000 square foot portion of the Calliham building all at the same time.
