Volunteer Guardian ad Litem Program McCormick & Edgefield County

Child Abuse-What You Can Do
web posted June 30, 2010
EDGEFIELD – Child abuse and neglect; you’ve read about it in the newspaper, magazine articles, maybe on the internet.  You probably have seen special reports or entire shows devoted to it on television.  It’s something that happens in another state, another town, but never in our community. The grim reality is that it does happen to children in our communities—maybe even next door.

There were over 19,000 reports of abuse and neglect in South Carolina in the 2009 fiscal year.  It is not confined to the upper, middle or lower part of our state.  It is found in poor areas and in rich areas.  Abuse and neglect know no county lines, no ethnicity, and no social class.

You may be thinking, “how tragic, but what can I do about it?  I am not in law enforcement.  I don’t have a degree in therapy.  I don’t work for the Department of Social Services.”  That’s where the Volunteer Guardian ad Litem Program comes in.  Our volunteers receive free training to help them understand the Family Court System and develop skills to advocate for the best interest of children who have been abused or neglected.

There are no special requirements, no level of degree needed.  If you have a desire to help a child have an opportunity for a better life, you have met the biggest prerequisite in becoming a volunteer.

The answer to the question is YES I CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.  I CAN make a difference.  I CAN be an advocate for children who can’t speak for themselves.  I WILL call Desiree Council at (803) 637-9614 in McCormick County to get more information and sign up for our training starting August 4, 2010.  A child is waiting for you to make that call.

For more information contact Desiree B. Council at (803) 637-9614
