Burglary suspect arrested just yards away from jail

web posted July 1, 2008
EDGEFIELD – Edgefield Police have made an arrest in a first degree burglary case that took place late Thursday night. Douglas Carter, 19, of Beaverdam Street in Edgefield was taken into custody on Saturday and was booked into the Edgefield County Detention Center. Carter is one of two men police believe broke into a home on Beaverdam Street while the owner was asleep inside. The owner said ordinarily he would have been at work at that time of night.

When the homeowner went to investigate the noise from a window in a door being broken, he confronted Mr. Carter inside the home near the hallway as a second unknown black male fled out the door.

According to police reports Mr. Carter tried to explain why he was in the home and then fled the scene.

An Edgefield Police Officer on patrol spotted Mr. Carter walking along Jeter Street and Railroad Street around 9 pm Saturday and after speaking with him placed him under arrest and drove the few yards to the Edgefield County Detention Center and booked him into custody.
