Spill of animal waste by-products closes intersection for second time
this year
web
posted July 1, 2009
EDGEFIELD – A spill
of chicken and pork
by-products closed traffic in Edgefield for the second time
since April and involved the same company. A Carolina By-Products
truck, out of Ward SC, hauling the waste material was traveling through
the 4-way stop at Jeter Street, Highway 23, and the Highway 25 Bypass
when the spill took place around 8 pm. The spill closed a majority of
traffic until midnight as the clean up took place.
Edgefield Police closed traffic to all personal vehicles during the
clean up but did allow heavy transport trucks to continue their traffic
through the state highway bypass alternating between the southbound and
northbound lanes. The South Carolina Transport Police
were also contacted and cited the driver, as did Edgefield Police for
the spill.
Carolina By-Products sent a clean up crew to the scene to remove the
waste from the roadway. The material, described at “guts and innards”
presented a greasy covering of the roadway which made driving
conditions hazardous.
The truck was said to be in route from Elberton Ga. to a reclamation
site at the company in Ward. It is unknown at this time if the truck
was overloaded, which may have contributed to the spill. State
Transportation Police were in the process of weighing the truck at
press time and the results were unknown.
