Convicted sex offender back behind bars 60 days after release of 15 year sentence

web posted July 6, 2006

EDGEFIELD – Edgefield Police spotted a man Tuesday night on Rosa Hill Street just before 10:00 pm that they knew had an outstanding warrant for assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. When police tried to confront the man, he ran, setting into motion a manhunt that involved officers from the Edgefield Police Department, Johnston Police Department, and the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office.

As officers began setting up a perimeter to contain the man, the Edgefield County Sheriff’s bloodhound team was summoned to the scene. After the bloodhound team arrived at the last known location of the man a call went out to all officers that the “dogs are on the ground.”

The bloodhounds quickly picked up on the man’s scent and began tracking him. Within the hour police had Freddie Cheatham, 57, of Youngblood Road in Edgefield, in custody. He is presently being held on the warrant for the assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and a custody order for other possible charges. Edgefield Chief of Police Ronnie Carter said his department is filing resisting arrest charges presently and other felonies were in the “investigative stages” and charges are pending the investigations.

Mr. Cheatham was released from prison after serving 15 years for a first-degree criminal sexual assault he was convicted of in 1991. He was released in late April and registered with the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office as a sex offender on May 9 of this year.

The present aggravated assault charge stems from an assault with a weapon that took place in Edgefield, a story EdgefieldDaily.com reported on June 29. The other cases under investigation include at least two felonies.
