Senior Citizen Building destroyed in late night fire web posted July 6, 2007 Edgefield Firemen were the first on the scene and quickly began battling the blaze. As additional units arrived each took a position around the building in an effort to extinguish the fire. One fireman was injured and was taken from the scene on a stretcher. The nature of his injuries was not provided on the scene. The rear section of the building collapsed about a half an hour into fighting the blaze and within the hour the entire building was a total loss. The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time though workers on the scene said the building has been plagued with electrical problems lately. Veterans Affairs Director John Rikard was angry as he watched the building, which housed his office, burn. “This damn county won’t spend any money to fix a building in this county,” he said. “That sorry ass (County Councilman Everett) Kitchens would rather get rid of employees than fix the things that need to be done.” Firefighters remained on the scene well into the early morning hours dousing the remains of the building.
