Local Youth Get Feet Wet with Ecology
web
posted July 7, 2009
EDGEFIELD –
Twenty-one youths from the
Women in Unity Summer Enrichment Camp learned, laughed and had a great
time stomping around Turkey Creek during the More Kids in the Woods
Creek Stomp, hosted by the National Wild Turkey Federation and funded
by a grant from the U.S. Forest Service.
During the Creek Stomp, youth learned to identify local plants,
insects, fish and more. After a morning of learning about the
importance of healthy water sources, the students enjoyed pizza and ice
cream. Even lunchtime provided a fun science lesson, as
participants learned the role salt plays in lowering the freezing point
of ice to help make ice cream.
“This was a fun-filled and educational day for a lot of kids who
probably would not have otherwise had the chance to do something like
this,” said Mandy Harling, NWTF’s JAKES program coordinator. “We
appreciate the U.S. Forest Service’s support, which will help offset
the cost of 22 conservation events like this across North Carolina,
South Carolina and Virginia this year.”
JAKES (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship) is the
NWTF’s outreach program for youth 12 years old and younger.
Xtreme JAKES is the NWTF’s newest program for teens ages 13 to 17.
Through local JAKES/Xtreme JAKES events held across the country,
participants learn fun new ways to enjoy the outdoors.
Women in Unity is a nonprofit, faith-based organization whose mission
is to support women, children and their families to bring positive
change to the community. They can be reached at
