Bears Sighted in Edgefield Sunday

web posted July 7, 2014

EDGEFIELD Edgefield Police responded to a call of two baby bears being spotted in the bottom land near the trestle Sunday evening around 8 pm. The woman reported her children ran inside to tell her about the bears, but she would not let them back outside and called police.

While in route to the scene, a Sheriff's Deputy came over the radio telling officers to "look out for mama bear". Officers searched the area, including the walking trail, and did not locate the bears. Dispatch was asked to notify the Department of Natural Resources about the sighting.

Following the search, one of the officers met with the woman and the children to gather more information about the sighting.

This is the second sighting in the town since January of this year. The first came when a Brooks Street man captured the image of a bear on a trail-cam he placed behind his home after receiving it as a Christmas gift.

Another sighting in the town took place in July of 2007.

Edgefield Daily has reported on a number of sighting around the county over the past 10 years. DNR officials confirm bears are roaming the county, however; have never given possible population numbers. Most bear sightings are reported in the western and southern parts of the county.

The photo used above is from another report in 2014 in the Merriwether/Westside area.
