Checkpoint leads to arrest of two suspected drug dealers
web
posted July 8, 2008
EDGEFIELD – Edgefield Police have taken
two more alleged drug dealers off the streets during a checkpoint
license check just before the July 4 holiday. While conducting a
checkpoint with the assistance of the South Carolina Highway Patrol,
police had two teens pull up in blue Mitsubishi. While asking the
driver for his license and insurance the officer smelled a “heavy odor
of marijuana” and asked the driver and his passenger if they had been
smoking marijuana in the car. Both said no.
The officer had the driver pull to the side and had both teens exit the
car. As the investigation continued a cigarette pack that had one
rolled cigarette believed to be marijuana inside. As the search of the
car was conducted a “to go cup” from a restaurant partially filled was
found to contain three clear plastic bags of what was also believed to
be marijuana.
The driver, 17-year-old George Deatron Jones Jr., of W. A. Reel Drive,
Edgefield said the pack of cigarettes belonged to his cousin, “who
smokes marijuana,” reports state. Asked about the remaining drugs Jones
stated some of the drugs were his, “but not all’.
Jones was placed under arrest, as was his passenger, 18-year-old Taylor
Kenneth Brooks, of Telfair Street, Augusta, Georgia.
Both men were booked into the Edgefield County Detention Center on a
custody hold for pending warrants for possession of marijuana with the
intent to distribute and possession of marijuana with the intent to
distribute within the proximity of a school or park. A total of 32.6
grams of marijuana was seized along with a total of $45.
