Director and Chairman of Senior Citizens Council offer Open Letter web posted July 10, 2007 COUNTY – As most of you know by now, the Edgefield County Senior Citizens Council, along with several other governmental agencies suffered a major loss in a fire on the night of July 5, 2007. Despite the valiant efforts of virtually all of the fire departments in the county, the blaze was not able to be suppressed. Fortunately, an adjoining building and a home next door were spared any damage by the skill of the firemen led by Edgefield Fire Chief Roger Ellis. We want to thank the entire fireman involved for their all night vigil. They had the support of our local police and Mike Casey, Director of Emergency Preparedness. We are lucky to have the volunteers in these departments and law enforcement who are called into duty for jobs at late night and for long hours. You have our deep gratitude. The two of us had a late night phone conversation as to how we could recover and serve our clients. Shortly after 7:30 a.m. , one of us called Mayor Ken Durham and asked for his approval for our agencies to set u temporary office in the town gym. He quickly acceded to that request and later called to offer council chambers for our use. The two of us want to emphasize the overwhelming co-operation by our many local officials to assist our needs. We truly understand that thing can happen for the better when we all work together. This tragic event only drives that point home more clearly. The two of us also want to express our thanks and appreciation to Upper Savannah COG office on aging for their support and assistance. Our agency is going to be up and running its operations as soon as we can. We will prioritize the most critical needs to be undertaken first. We have a number of clients on dialysis and other medical needs that will be the first order of business. We ask our clients to be patient s our records have been destroyed. However, all of our vehicles are safe and will return to service immediately. We know that our services are essential for many clients. Last and certainly not least, we want to thank our employees for their assistance in this stressful time. Many were at the scene of the fire – some for all night. Friday was pay day and we were all set to see that our employees were compensated with the help of Wachovia Bank. An organization is only as successful as its staff is competent and we feel we have been blessed by their service. Again, we pledge to you to resume our full operation as soon as possible. Sincerely, Jim Griffith, Director Roger Hill Timpson, Chairman For
