Stray Bullets Hit Homes, Vehicle, During Wednesday Night Shootout

web posted July 11, 2014

EDGEFIELD A shootout on Eastview Road Wednesday night came closer to injuring small children inside a nearby home than inflicting injuries to those doing the shooting. Nearly 20 shell casing were found scattered at the scene and two slugs were recovered inside one of the five homes struck by stray bullets. Inside one of the homes was a grandmother with her grandchildren when the shootout took place.

Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputies and Edgefield Police were dispatched to several 911 calls around 6:30 Wednesday evening of a large group of black males gathered in the small mobile home lot at 20 Eastview Road and gunfire erupting following a loud verbal dispute. Some of the residents witnessed the argument and then the shooting. One woman even recorded the incident on her cell phone.

No one has been reported injured as a result of the shootout.

All of those responsible for the shooting fled the area in a number of vehicles prior to officers arriving on the scene. However, witnesses were able to give investigators the names of at least five of those involved, including one of the possible shooters, as well as vehicle descriptions and direction of travel from the scene.

According to an incident report released Thursday, one group of black males arrived in at least two vehicles at one of the mobile homes in the park. Shortly after another group showed up in additional vehicles a verbal dispute ensued. One of the suspects is said to have walked away from the other group, took off his shirt and then ran back towards the group and began firing.

Witnesses reported that is when those in the other group began firing back.

Investigators recovered 19 shell casings from the scene, four from a .40 caliber pistol and fifteen from a 9 mm pistol. How many guns were actually fired is unknown at this time. Bullet holes were found in five mobile homes located in the park and two slugs were recovered from inside one. The report states the homes hit by stray bullets were on opposite sides of the park showing multiple shots were fired in both directions. A vehicle belonging to one of the residents was also hit by a bullet.

The woman that recorded the shootout on her cell phone played the video for investigators on the scene and was said to have emailed a copy to the Sheriff's Office later.

As of Thursday morning no arrests had been made in the case.

Edgefield Daily will continue to follow the story and will have updates as more information becomes available or arrests have been made.
