Edgefield Police shoot at charging pit bull
web
posted July 14, 2009
EDGEFIELD – Edgefield Police responding to
a call of a pit bull jumping on a Mims Street man late Saturday night
ended up with one of the officers firing shots at the dog when it made
aggressive moves and charged the officer. The officer drew his pistol
and fired at least two shots at the pit bull.
Police were notified of a white pit bull running at large by a Mims
Street man claiming the dog jumped on him. He was able to escape
without being bitten. While in route to the call one officer reported
seeing a white pit bull running at large with what, “looked to have a
broken leg.”
Upon arrival at the complainant’s home, he was not located and
reportedly left the scene. Officers then searched the area in an
attempt to locate the dog. A short time later officers were able to
meet with the complainant at his home and gathered information about
the owner of the dog, who lived near by. While gathering the
information one of the officers stepped to the side of the house and
found the pit bull crouched and growling.
As the officer backed away and informed his partner of the situation
the dog charged and the officer fired a shot into the ground in front
of the pit bull and a second shot at the dog. The pit bull then turned
and fled down the walking trail located just behind the house.
Officers continued to comb the area in an effort to locate the dog but
were unsuccessful. It remained unknown if either of the shots struck
the dog.
Officers did speak with the owner of the dog and explained the
situation and the events that had taken place. Charges, according to
police reports, are pending against the owner of the pit bull for a
domesticated animal running at large.
