Felony charge dismissed on hit and run driver
web
posted July 15, 2009
EDGEFIELD – Hit and run with great bodily
injury charges against Raymond Lawrence Harris, 29, were dismissed by
Chief Magistrate Davis Parkman on July 8 at a preliminary hearing and
Harris was set free. He had been held on a $50,000 bond since the
incident. An Edgefield teen was rushed to the MCG Trauma Center on
April 28 after being struck by a pick-up truck and was left on the side
of the road around 10:40 pm. Harris was
later identified as the driver and was arrested the night of the
incident.
According to records obtained through a Freedom of Information request,
Chief Magistrate Davis Parkman dismissed the charge because the
arresting officer, who contacted the court two weeks prior to the
hearing stated he would be away on required training at the time of the
scheduled hearing.
The hearing was not rescheduled or postponed and Harris was set free
because the officer did not appear at the hearing.
Edgefield Police Chief Ronnie Carter said Tuesday that the dismissal of
charges would not prevent his department seeking an indictment. With
the evidence collected at the time of the investigation, the Edgefield
Police Department will seek a direct indictment from the Grand Jury in
spite of the dismissal by Chief Magistrate Davis Parkman.
“He (Harris) will still be charged,” Chief Carter said.
