Callers track reckless driver, report crash

web posted July 19, 2008
EDGEFIELD – E911 Dispatchers began getting calls of a possible drunk driver just before 5 Friday afternoon by several drivers in and around Edgefield. Callers were tracking the black SUV while dispatchers notified Edgefield Police. Before they were able to locate the vehicle it turned on the bypass and began making its way past Parker Elementary before entering Highway 23. As Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the area the truck turned down Two Mile Road and crashed a short distance later.

“He was all over the road,” said eyewitness Josh Corley of Edgefield. “I picked him up around Parker (Elementary) and followed him. Several cars tried to stop him, but he would just go around them.” According to witnesses, the driver struck several mailboxes while callers were following.

The driver lost control of the 2003 Chevy Trailblazer when he overcorrected after running off the road and rolled the SUV. Early reports were the driver was entrapped and the Edgefield Fire Department was called to the scene. When they arrived the driver was standing up inside the overturned vehicle and it was a fairly quick extraction.

The driver of the truck was said to be a diabetic and was suffering from very low blood sugar and was not intoxicated, responders said on the scene. Several beer cans, opened and unopened, were strewn about the wreckage.

The Trenton man was taken by ambulance to MCG Hospital in Augusta to be treated for what appeared to be minor injuries.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

The Citizen News contributed to this report.
