Driver in fatal crash identified

web posted July 23, 2007
EDGEFIELD – The identity of the driver of the fatal truck crash on Sweetwater Road early Saturday morning has been released. Deputy Coroner Luther Beason said the driver of the truck was 21-year-old Daniel L. Thompson of Garrett Road. Mr. Thompson died from “massive body trauma” Beason said and most likely died prior to the fire. “The fire was secondary,” Mr. Beason said.

Stephen D. Posey Funeral Home in North Augusta is in charge of arrangements. A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 2 pm at the funeral home and will be officiated by Rev. Jeremy Daley. Interment will be private.

Daniel was a native of Loganville, GA, having resided with his aunt and uncle, Matthew and Mary Jo Duplisea in Edgefield for the past year. He had served as an Engineer in the Navy for three and a half years where he was the recipient of several medals including the National Defense Service Medal, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, the Navy E Ribbon and the Overseas Deployment Ribbon. Daniel worked as a welder at TTX Railroad and loved fishing. Daniel was preceded in death by his mother Donna Lynn Thompson. Survivors include his father Robert Thompson, Lyons GA; two sisters, Heather Marie Thompson, Lyons, GA and Kimberly Thompson, Louisiana; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Thompson, Sr., Lyons, GA; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Neil Durden, Eatonton, GA; several aunts, uncles and cousins. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service.

Mr. Thompson was killed when his Dodge pickup truck, which he had only recently purchased, ran off the southbound shoulder of Sweetwater Road. It is believed that he overcorrected while trying to bring the right tires back onto the roadway and lost control, sending the truck skidding off the northbound side of the road before rolling and striking at least two trees.

A fire erupted right after the crash and it quickly spread and engulfed the vehicle. Edgefield Fire Fighters extinguished the blaze and discovered Mr. Thompson in the passenger side of the cab of the truck.
