A lesson never learned? web posted July 26, 2006 EDGEFIELD – While an Edgefield County Deputy was on patrol he observed a man driving a 1990 Freightliner truck that was turning off Columbia Road in Edgefield. The deputy had assisted Trenton Police in arresting the man on July 15 for driving under suspension and turned around to conduct a traffic stop. The deputy was able to get the truck to stop on Church Street. Then things deteriorated. The driver of the truck, Rodney Dwayne Hamilton was asked to step out of the truck, which he did. Mr. Hamilton, according to police reports, stated he was on his way to a drug abuse class at the South Carolina Probation and Parole Office. The deputy advised Mr. Hamilton he was under arrest for driving under suspension. Before placing Mr. Hamilton in the back of the patrol car the unit was searched and cleared as standard procedure. While searching the truck the deputy found a clear baggie with a white residue inside, which was taken into evidence and later turned over to narcotics investigators. While searching the truck the deputy observed Mr. Hamilton, “moving around a lot in the back seat of the patrol car.” The deputy asked Mr. Hamilton if he was attempting to hide anything in the car, which he denied. The Deputy had Mr. Hamilton exit the patrol car and placed him in another unit that arrived on the scene. The deputy searched the back seat area and found a small straw with white residue in it. It was also taken into evidence. When confronted about the evidence found in the truck Mr. Hamilton claimed it was left over from being arrest for crack cocaine the week before and denied any connection to the straw found in the patrol car. Mr. Hamilton was charged with driving under suspension, 3rd offense, the same charge as last week due to Mr. Hamilton not being found guilty of the previous 3rd offense charge at the time of this arrest. Police reports state Mr. Hamilton’s license has been suspended twelve times. He was released Tuesday on a $3,000 personal recognizance bond. No drug charges were shown on jail records. For
