Prescription drug thefts from vehicles rise at area shopping centers web posted July 27, 2007 EDGEFIELD – Edgefield County Sheriff’s Investigators are following leads in several cases of the theft of narcotics from automobiles at Apple Square and the Bi-Lo parking lots. Sheriff’s Chief Investigator Randy Doran said that in the last two months alone there have been at least eight cases reported of someone entering unlocked cars and trucks and stealing the prescription drugs after the victims leave a nearby pharmacy. “The best thing people can do is to secure their vehicles and to keep prescriptions and other valuables locked in the truck or stored out of sight,” Doran said. It is believed that the culprit may be staking out the pharmacy and then watching to see if the person parks and enters one of the other businesses in the two shopping centers. “They could be waiting for the person to get out of their car and then just pull up beside them to see if the car is unlocked,” Investigator Doran said. Though the theft of prescription medications is not limited to the two shopping centers, such as a burglary at a Summerfield Court home in Trenton where medications were taken last week, it is the most prevalent location for such thefts recently. Investigator Doran said investigators are following leads in the cases but do not have a solid suspect in the thefts. The medications stolen are not related to any single type of drug and seem to be a crime of convenience. To protect yourself from a similar theft a few words of advice were given.
The Sheriff’s Office also asks that you report suspicious activity in the area such as someone that looks out of place or driving around in the parking area for extended periods of time. For
