Second Edgefield bank robbed at gunpoint this year, reward offered
web
posted July 29, 2008
Below: Edgefield County Sheriff Adell Dobey speaks with an
investigator moments after the robbery
EDGEFIELD – The Town
of Edgefield is
becoming popular, unfortunately it is becoming popular with bank
robbers too as the Regions Bank on the corner of Main Street and
Columbia Road was robbed at gunpoint around 2 pm Monday for the town's
second bank robbery this year. Edgefield Police and Sheriff’s Deputies
swarmed the area in an attempt to locate the robber as he fled the area
on foot.
Sheriff’s Chief Investigator Randy Doran said the masked suspect
entered the bank, produced a black handgun, and demanded cash. After
receiving an undisclosed amount of money he fled the bank on foot and
ran down Main Street and then turned down Macedonia Street.
Construction workers saw the man as he passed through the yard of a
home under renovations.
The Sheriff’s
Bloodhound Team (Left) was called to the scene and, in spite of
the heavy rains, attempted to track the suspect. The search was called
off after about an hour.
The suspect is described as a black male, unknown age, around 5’ 8”
tall weighing approximately 170 pounds. He was wearing a white
“hoodie”, black pants, white tennis shoes, and black gloves. His face
was covered with an orange or pinkish colored mask.
Edgefield Police Chief Ronnie Carter said they are offering a reward of
$500 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the
suspect. EdgefieldDaily.com has also agreed to add $250 to the reward
for a total of $750. “At this time we believe he may be a local (man),”
Chief Carter said, “and
it is also believed he stayed on foot,” during his escape.
Chief Carter said bank employees did an excellent job in providing
information by watching which way the robber left the bank and called
911 while locking the doors.
Edgefield County Sheriff’s Investigators processed the crime scene for
evidence. A photo from the surveillance cameras was not immediately
available.
The FBI is assisting in the investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Edgefield County Sheriff’s
Office at 803-637-5337.
This is the second armed bank robbery this year. The first
occurred in
January when an unmasked white male entered the Carolina First Bank
on
Main Street and demanded cash. He remains at large at this time and is
believed to be responsible for several other bank robberies across the
state and possibly Georgia.
