Fiery crash closes Bypass for hours

web posted July 29, 2009
EDGEFIELD – A fiery crash around noon Tuesday left one man injured and the Highway 25 Bypass closed for several hours. Dispatchers for 911 began receiving calls on the crash just after noon reporting multiple vehicles involved and at least one in flames. Edgefield Police, Firemen, Sheriff’s Deputies, and EMS raced to the scene and arrived to find not only one of the trucks involved on fire but also the roadway and surrounding brush as well.

The driver of a Ford F150 pickup, which according to police was the catalyst of the mutli-vehicle crash, was found unconscious and partially ejected from his overturned truck (Below). An off duty EMS worker and a First Responder began assessing his injuries as bystanders were using fire extinguishers, tarps, and clothing, to beat back the spreading fire from reaching the overturned truck of the injured driver.

Firefighters arrived moments later and began to attack the spreading fires and were able to extinguish the blaze in a matter of minutes. As EMS workers arrived on the scene the driver was quickly immobilized and loaded into an awaiting ambulance and rushed to the MCG Trauma Unit in Augusta complaining of chest, leg, and back pain.

The drivers of the other two vehicles, a large International flatbed pulling a tractor on a trailer and a Mitsubishi Eclipse, were both uninjured in the collision.

According to witnesses, the driver of the Ford truck was traveling northbound on the Bypass followed by the Mitsubishi. As the International truck and trailer approached from the southbound lane the Ford truck abruptly swerved into the oncoming lane and the collision ensued. The International truck lost two tires and a fuel tank ruptured and began spilling fuel which burst into flames as the Ford truck began to tumble.

The driver of the Eclipse said he swerved off the right side of the roadway to avoid striking either truck and crashed into several trees bordering the roadway. “Everything just burst into flames,” he said on the scene.

Those on the scene right after the crash said flames shot into the air twenty to thirty feet as black smoke engulfed the area. Several pine trees lining the roadway were scorched nearly to their tops. One woman that was behind the collision when it happened said she ran to help the injured driver moments afterwards and all she could see was a “huge plume of black smoke”.

All traffic was diverted from the Highway 25 Bypass until the scene could be cleared.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol and the State Transportation Police are investigating the crash. The roadway was reopened around 3:30 pm.
