Accused molester in custody after release from hospital
web
posted July 30, 2009
EDGEFIELD – Accused
child molester Joseph
Connell Williams, 41, of the 400 block of Bausket Street in Edgefield
was released from the MCG Hospital Wednesday and apparently walked off
without police being notified. Williams was wanted on two counts of
criminal
sexual conduct with minors under the age of 16.
As EdgefieldDaily.com
reported, Williams was hospitalized after a fiery
crash on the Highway 25 Bypass in Edgefield on Tuesday that closed the
highway for hours. Williams gave rescuers a false name at the time of
the crash and it was not until he was in route to MCG that police
learned he was the man they were seeking on warrants for the alleged
sexual assaults of two area girls between the ages of 13 and 15.
According to police reports, Williams is accused of forcing the girls
to have sex with him over a period of several years until the repeated
attacks were reported.
Edgefield Police Chief Ronnie Carter said Tuesday that they notified
the MCG Police Department that warrants for Williams’ arrest were in
hand and that they would extradite back to South Carolina. Chief Carter
said, at the time, he expected Williams to be booked into the Richmond
County Detention Center upon his release from the hospital where he
would await extradition.
After learning of Williams’ release from MCG, Edgefield Police and the
Aiken and Edgefield County Sheriff’s Offices worked in conjunction
trying to locate him at various locations. Wednesday evening Aiken
County authorities confirmed they had him in custody after finding him
at the home of a family member.
Williams was booked into the Edgefield County Detention Center
Wednesday night where is awaiting a bond hearing that is expected to
take place sometime Thursday.
The investigation into the case is ongoing and additional charges are
possible.
