Here's Your Card: Couple invites police inside while smoking pot web posted July 31, 2007 EDGEFIELD – An Edgefield man called police to report the theft of several items from a home on Jeter Street Saturday afternoon. When the officer’s arrived they were shown where the items stolen were in plain view at a home located next door. Officer’s photographed the property and attempted to make contact with the homeowner but were instead charged by a white pit bull dog, which was sprayed with pepper spray resulting in the dog running away. Officers tried to make contact with the owner of the home but no one came to the door. Officer’s arrived back at the location on Sunday night in an effort to retrieve the property and was met by a man described as the homeowner’s boyfriend who invited the officers into the home. When officers entered the home they reported, “walking into a visible cloud of marijuana smoke,” in addition to a “strong odor of marijuana”. The officers asked the boyfriend if they had been smoking marijuana and he stated they had. At this time one of the officers noticed what appeared to be a marijuana cigarette next to the couch where Leslie Denise Burgess, 28, was sitting. According to police reports the officer asked Ms. Burgess if the marijuana was hers and if it was what they were smoking and she said yes. The officer asked her to hand the suspected marijuana cigarette to him which she did. She was then given a summons for simple possession of marijuana. Officers reported that the woman understood marijuana was illegal but did not understand why the officer was, “taking the joint from her.” The officers then began asking about the lawn furniture and other items reported stolen by the owner of the property next door. The boyfriend stated he would return the items to the neighbor’s property. Formal charges for the theft of the property will have to be filed by the neighboring property owner. For
