Dignitaries help in groundbreaking of Senior Citizen's Complex web posted August 1, 2007 EDGEFIELD – Local and area dignitaries
were in Edgefield Tuesday morning for the groundbreaking ceremony for
the new Edgefield County Senior Citizens Council (ECSCC) Complex on
Center Springs Road next to W. E. Parker Elementary School. Roger
Timpson, ECSCC Chairman, said the new building was a dream that has
turned into a reality – and none too soon with the former building
recently being destroyed by fire. The new complex was already in the
works before the fire Timpson said.
The early plans were to build a 20,000 square foot building, “That’s what we wanted,” Timpson said, “but we could only afford a 10,000 foot building.” Architect Harry Rowland was able to scale back the original plan to the one that is now getting underway Mr. Timpson said. Among the many dignitaries was Representative Bill Clyburn. He said he was proud of the progress the ECSCC has made over the years and knew that the new facility would be a great asset to the county. Edgefield County Council Chairman Monroe Kneece stated he too was looking forward to the new complex. “It’s been a long time coming and I’m glad to see it get underway.” The new building was said to be ready in just 248 days, or just over eight months. Once completed, the building will expand the programs available to senior citizens including one for Alzheimer’s patients that will allow family caregivers an opportunity to have some free time while their loved one is in the care of those at the facility. “This will give them time to run errands or take care of other family matters,” Mr. Timpson said. The new complex will be built on a 20-acre site and is made possible through a $965,000 USDA Rural Development low-interest loan. The total cost of the project is stated to be $1,963,000. Tee Miller, State Director for Rural Development said, “We are pleased to partner with the Edgefield Senior Citizens Council on this project and applaud their foresight in planning the Senior Center Complex for their community.” Jim Griffith, Director of the ECSCC, said the council was founded in 1972 and expanded in 1995 to provide transportation services to area seniors. The new complex has been in the planning since 1998, he said. Rev. Stacy Williams of the Edgefield First Baptist Church offered the prayer dedicating the building to furthering the work of God and made reference to the Holy Bible that was the only item not destroyed by the fire. “I see that as more than just a sign,” Rev. Williams said. The building will be constructed by Edgefield Construction. For
